My PAX East 2016 Experience - Day 3

Even though I ended up walking through Boston for the same amount of time on my second day as the first, I started off my final day much earlier.  I woke up at 9AM and headed into Boston.  After missing my turn and getting turned around, I arrived at the convention center at 11AM.  I didn’t have the same luck the second day as I did the first, so I ended up having to find parking elsewhere.  Now that I knew the layout of downtown Boston better, I managed to find a parking garage that advertised convention parking.  Luckily it was near the hotel where the fan meetup was held the previous night, so I didn’t have any problem making my way back to the convention center.

I didn’t get to go in through the exhibitor’s entrance this time, but luckily the crowd was already inside, so the line wasn’t nearly as long as it was when I arrived at the opening of the show on the first day.  I spent the previous days checking out the indie games, so I decided to check out the big name games on display before heading to work.  I stopped by Nintendo’s booth, and tried out the games on display.  I was pleasantly surprised by Starfox Zero.  From what I played, I found it really enjoyable, and didn’t notice the slowdown that many had seen.  My favorite booth was the Shadow Warrior 2 booth, which was adorned with cherry blossom trees.  It was really a sight to behold.  I didn’t get to play the game, due to the long lines, but it looked impressive in motion.  I was hoping to try out the games for the virtual reality headsets, but the waiting lines were so long there was a list that was filled up ahead of time, so that was out.

Since the Shadow Warrior 2 display was so close to the Double Fine booth, I decided to see if anyone wanted me to take over so that they could take a break.  My offer was gladly accepted, so I took the tablet that was being used for credit card transactions and settled in for my last day helping out at the show.  The large T-shirts were mostly sold out by the time I arrived, and the Brutal Legend art books sold out before the show closed.  Gang Beasts continued to be a crowd-attracter, and more Everything also brought in its share of people to marvel in its charming weirdness.

The time seemed to fly by, and before I knew it, it was 5:30 and we began counting down the clock. Of course, the last thirty minutes seemed to crawl.  It always works that way when you are paying attention to the time.  I decided to help the team pack up before they headed out, as they had an early morning the next day, since their flight back to California left at 6AM.  I bid the team farewell, and told Spaff that I was available to help out again if they ever came back to PAX East in the future.

I did get lost on the way back, as to be expected, but thankfully I was close this time. I asked for help on my previous days, but their advice just ended up in me going around in circles.  This time, the parking garage was right down the street, so I was able to easily find my way to it from the directions I was given.  I was going to head directly back to New York, but I was tired so I opted to spend an extra day and a half relaxing before I headed home.   All in all, the experience was fun, despite my knack of getting lost.  I got to check out some games that I was anticipating, got to meet some of my gaming heroes, as well as people that I had only known online through fan websites and in my time as a community manager.  Best of all, I got to help one of my favorite companies, and I have a lot of fond memories and pictures to remember from my experience.  If the opportunity to do something like this came up to do this again in the future, I’d take it in a heart beat.

Double Fine Will Be at PAX East this weekend

Double Fine will be coming to PAX East this weekend. They'll be at booth #6123 showing off Day of the Tentacle Remastered and Headlander. They'll also have three Double Fine Presents titles, Gnog, Gang Beasts, and Everything. A new title will be shown at the show as well.

They'll also be selling merchandise at the show, including the Raz and Two Headed Baby Pinny Arcade pins, and a new special edition game bundle box. The bundle contains 10 games, with 10 game cards drawn Jon Magram and Melissa King. The game cards can be seen below (click to see them in a larger size).

I'll also be volunteering at the Double Fine booth at PAX East this weekend, so if you're at the show, come by and say hello. :)

Sales, Releases, and Previews

For the next couple of hours, you can pick up The Journey Down: Chapter One on Steam for less than $1 USD. If you hurry, you can also continue the journey for a discount, as Chapter Two is on sale on Steam as well, for 10% off the usual price.

If you're wondering how the third and final chapter of The Journey Down is coming along, you can head over to the Skygoblin website, where they have some work in progress sketches of locations you'll visit in Chapter Three, as well as some hints as to what the game will be like.  They're aiming for an 80′s action movie feel for this chapter, in contrast to the noir vibes of previous chapters, which make for an exciting finale.

The Shadowgate remake has been updated with a quest for Halloween entitled the Dread Pumpkin Quest. The update also comes with new features, such as additional achievements. additional options and keybinds, the ability to play with retro graphics, a new Iron Man mode that increases the challenge of the game, an advanced hint system, a key to highlights all objects that can be interacted with in a room, a new tutorial system, an additional game mode for those new to the Shadowgate universe, and a wheel based command system.

Also, if you pledged high enough on the Massive Chalice crowdfunding campaign but couldn't test the beta right away since it was originally Windows only and you use Mac or Linux, you're in luck. The 0.83 beta patch was released on Halloween with Mac and Linux support.

While we're on the subject of Double Fine, Brutal Legend Limited Edition is shipping now after a short delay. If you already ordered it, you should be getting an e-mail with a tracking code shortly. If you missed the October 23rd deadline, don't worry, as you'll be able to pick it up after all the boxes have shipped for $25, while supplies last.

News Catch Up

There's been quite a few things that have happened lately that I've missed, mostly related to adventure game developers, but that aren't adventure games themselves, so I'll list them all in this post:

First of all, the actual adventure game news. The Walking Dead Season One and Season Two is going to be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on the 24th of October, both in physical form at retail and digitally.  Additionally, The Wolf Among Us will be coming to retail for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in North America on the 4th of November and in Europe on the 7th of November.

The Wolf Among Us is also going to be adapted into a graphic novel, titled Fables: The Wolf Among Us. It will appear in digital form first in December of this year, with collected print issues following in early 2015.

Secondly, since this blog was at one point dedicated to Telltale, Double Fine, and Autumn Moon news, I feel like I should mention that there's quite a bit of Double Fine releases going on at the moment:

Costume Quest 2 is now available on Steam.  This sequel to Double Fine's 2010 role playing game Costume Quest and its downloadable content Grubbins on Ice is a time traveling romp to save Halloween.  Fans will be happy to know that it takes place right after the cliffhanger ending of Grubbins on Ice.

Costume Quest: Invasion of the Candy Snatchers is now available as well. In this graphic novel by Zac Gorman, the author of the webcomic Magical Game Time, the usual Costume Quest plot is reversed as it follows three Repugnian children who travel to the human world on Halloween in search of candy.

Brutal Legend: Limited Edition is a limited edition collector's boxset by Double Fine and Indiebox commemorating the 5th anniversary of the heavy metal themed action strategy game Brutal Legend.  Since Indiebox likes to keep its contents a surprise, nothing has been revealed about the contents, but they are said to contain "hand-painted artwork with DRM-free game copies, Steam keys, full color manuals, CD soundtracks, posters, collectibles, and much more".  For an idea of what to expect, check out the contents of September's Indiebox release.

Lastly, The Habitat Preservation Project is a non-profit project to get the world's first graphical massively multiplayer online game, Habitat, back online.  They managed to get a partial server working when they had a coding session in September 2014 with many programmers in attendance, including the original creators of Habitat, Chip Morningstar and Randy Farmer. The original Habitat, which had an interface and graphics similar to the adventure game Labyrinth, was released in beta form by Lucasfilm Games (now LucasArts) for the Quantum Link online service for Commodore 64 from 1986 until it was shut down in 1988. A sized down version was released as Club Caribe on Quantum link in January 1988. Fujitsu later licensed the code and released Fujitsu Habitat in Japan in 1990. Habitat and Club Caribe was highly influential, and it's code still lives on through WorldsAway, which premiered on CompuServe in 1995, and moved to the public internet in 1997. WorldsAway had multiple worlds, two of which survive today and are now known as Dreamscape and NewHorizone. Dreamscape was Fujitsu's first virtual world, and appeared when WorldsAway premiered in 1995. NewHorizone was originally Club Connect when it was launched by Fujitsu in 1998 and New Radio World when the WorldsAway worlds were sold and became part of an online world known as VZones in December 1998. New Radio World was renamed VZConnections in December 1999, and then newHorizone in September 2001. These two worlds are still a part of vZones, and the WorldsAway software has also recently been licensed for use in MetroWorlds.

Brütal Legend Downloadable Content Available

Brütal Legend now has downloadable content available for both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. The Brütal Legend Tears of the Hextadon map pack expands the Brütal Legend Stage Battle multiplayer experience with two new multiplayer maps. The Xbox 360 got the maps first. It's available since yesterday for 400 MS Points. However, PlayStation 3 users get the better deal. The content won't be available until tomorrow, but it will be free on that system until until November 19th, when it will become $4.99, whereas Xbox 360 users will have to pay for it from the get-go.

The two maps are called Circle of Tears and Death's Fjord. In the first map, Circle of Tears, vile waters have carved a rough-hewn circular battlefield into a forsaken land that players must circumvent to destroy their opponent. In the second map, Death's Fjord, players find themselves on an icy mountain pass with a dense cluster of fans that lie below, waiting to be harvested by those brave enough to capture them without cover from enemy attack. All players who download the new map pack will receive a free axe, the Blade of Ormagöden.

Tim Schafer hosted a multiplayer death match live from Double Fine showcasing the new maps, and GameTrailers has a video of it, if you're curious on how they play.

Brütal Legend Gameplay Impressions and Trailer

GameSpot has posted new impressions of the game, and have posted details about how the combat system works. It sounds fun, and humorous with the troops that you control being headbangers and teenage runaways. I'm not too sure about the strategy involved, as I don't really like real time strategy games, but it's mentioned as being RTS-lite, so it should be more direct and hopefully intuitive.

In (much) older news, this trailer was released two weeks ago, but I just watched it now. I wasn't too enthused about Brütal Lengend before, but I'm starting to warm up to it after watching this and reading GameSpot's preview. Tim's games always have great humor in them, and an engaging storyline. I'm not too much of a fan of multiplayer games, but the single player part should be fun.

10 Things You Don't Know About Brütal Legend

1UP's week long celebration of Brütal Legend continues! Today, they've posted 10 Things You Don't Know about the game, as written by Tim Schafer - for April Fools Day. So, expect them to be funny, if not really accurate. They also have four new never before seen screenshots of the game in action!
