Atari was formed by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Namby on June 27, 1972, a year after the two sold the first commercial arcade game, Computer Space, as Syzygy Engineering.
It was sold to Atari to Warner Communications in 1976 for $28 million US. In May 1984, a year after the video game crash of 1983, Warner formed NATCO (New Atari Company) in an attempt to downsize the Atari facility, employees, and spending to make it profitable.
In July 1, 1984, Jack Tramiel purchased most of the home and computer assets of Atari for $240 million in stocks and loans with interest. Tramel Technology was renamed Atari Corporation and Warner continued the arcade division as Atari Games.
